Long hours and mountains of paperwork can be a trucker's reality. Log Ninja, a new free app launched in 2023, aims to change that by helping drivers ditch paper logbooks and focus on safe driving.
The app automatically tracks driving time and reminds drivers when mandated rest breaks are approaching, reducing stress about compliance with regulations. Founder Bodhi Vette, a former bus driver himself, understands the burden of paperwork firsthand.
"The constant paperwork added a huge administrative hassle on top of long driving hours," Vette explains. "Drivers not only worry about logging hours accurately for proper pay, but also ensuring they take legally required breaks to avoid penalties. Focusing on paper logs while driving can be a safety risk."
In New Zealand, with roughly 200,000 commercial drivers, breaks are mandatory every five and a half hours, with a maximum of eleven daily driving hours. Vette highlights the financial burden traditional methods place on the trucking industry.
"Our research showed existing digital logbook costs create a barrier for drivers," he says. "Even paper logs, while cheaper upfront, require constant purchases, storage, and management for two years. The industry would save an estimated $24 million annually if all drivers used digital tools."
Log Ninja tackles this issue by offering a completely free option for all New Zealand drivers. Vette believes widespread adoption of digital logs will not only save money but also enhance road safety.
While some drivers appreciate the simplicity of paper logs, Log Ninja prioritizes a smooth transition. "The app is designed for any smartphone user and keeps control of log data with the driver," Vette assures.
Inspired by the aviation industry's record-keeping practices, Log Ninja is the first NZ Transport Agency-approved app that allows drivers to log hours across various driving disciplines. The app offers 92 driving types within five license classes, catering to everything from B-train trucks to taxis.
"Log Ninja simplifies selecting driving periods and vehicle types, with easy log export at the tap of a button," Vette concludes. "Every user benefits from a streamlined experience, better record-keeping, and ultimately, safer roads for New Zealand."
This free app, approved by the NZ Transport Agency, is available for download on the App Store and Google Play.
