The coalition Government has enacted legislation to terminate the Auckland Regional Fuel Tax by June 30, 2024.
This action fulfills a pledge outlined in the Government’s 100-day action plan. The cessation of this tax, which was implemented on July 1, 2018, entailed an additional 11.5 cents per litre at fuel pumps.
Transport Minister Simeon Brown emphasizes, "The passage of this bill signifies the redirection of remaining RFT funding towards transportation priorities jointly identified by Auckland Council and the Coalition Government."
Both Auckland Council and the Government concur on allocating the remaining RFT funding towards the Eastern Busway, electric trains, stabling for City Rail Link, and road corridor enhancements as the primary focuses.
Brown underscores the significance of transportation in unlocking Auckland's economic potential and improving residents' quality of life. He states, "Auckland's economic prosperity hinges on a robust transportation network, facilitating swift and safe commutes for its residents."
"The coalition Government prioritizes matters crucial to Aucklanders, such as reducing the cost of living, investing in congestion reduction, enhancing productivity, and fostering economic development," Brown adds.
