Former transport minister and Auckland Business Chamber chief executive, Simon Bridges, has been selected as the new board chair of the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) for a term of three years. Transport Minister Simeon Brown unveiled this appointment on Monday, lauding Bridges for his extensive experience and expertise in transport policy and governance.
"Bridges will bring a strong focus on delivery and outcomes, ensuring NZTA's alignment with the Government Policy Statement on land transport, crucial for providing the infrastructure New Zealanders need," Brown affirmed. He emphasized the critical role of transportation in the government's economic growth and productivity plan, expressing anticipation for collaborative efforts with Bridges to fulfill the government's transport objectives.
Acknowledging the interim leadership of Cassandra Crowley, who served as acting chair of NZTA over the past three months, Brown extended gratitude for her invaluable leadership, advice, and support during the transitional period.
Bridges, currently serving as the chief executive of the Auckland Business Chamber since 2022, boasts a diverse background. After a successful legal career, he entered Parliament in 2008, representing the Tauranga electorate until his retirement in 2022. Throughout his political journey, Bridges held various ministerial portfolios, including transport, economic development, and communications.
